Planning & Preparation

We discovered that U‑625 was not a standard VIIC model, but rather it was a “turm wintergarten” variety with a double-level ‘bandstand’, Atlantic bow, no 88mm deck gun, increased tower armament (two twin-barrel 20mm guns, and single-barrel 37mm cannon), FuMO-30 Seetakt radar, and FuMB-7 Naxos radar detector. We even managed to find the U-625 emblem via the Internet.

Since Revell of Germany had not yet released (or even announced) their VIIC/41 Atlantic-edition U-boat, I turned to the aftermarket to get the following items to build U-625:

  • Nautilus Models Turm II Wintergarten Conversion Set (72-901)
(wooden decks, extended tower w/ railings, extra armament, PE details, etc.)
  • Yankee Modelworks Upper Pressure Hull (YKM-7201)
  • Photoetch (PE) detail sets:
  • Steve Nuttall’s Model Barrels* (machined brass parts):
    • 20mm gun barrels
    • 37mm cannon barrel
    • propeller shafts
    • periscopes
  • Scale Scenics Brass Micro-Mesh (652-3501)
  • Gütermann thread (Dekor #9585, Nylon #000)

*Tragically, Steve Nuttall passed away in August 2006, and his products are not currently available. Other suppliers (such as Schatton-Modellbau) offer similar products.
